Fun Things to Do When You’re Stuck at Home
Stuck at home? You don’t have to be bored. If you are stuck because you don’t have a car or you are visiting family in the USA, perhaps you could walk, bike, skateboard, or try public transportation? The Bay Area has all kinds of travel options. Trying something new can be quite refreshing and fun.
However, if you have other things holding you back, such as a medical condition that means you have to stay at home or if leaving the house is such a burden that going out is not fun or restful, then check out these ideas to pass the time.
Get unstuck! “Homebound” doesn’t have to mean “bored”. Last year I fell down the stairs and broke my tailbone. For about a month I had trouble doing my usual activities and dealing with chronic pain was new to me. Every day when I was alert and I was able to I did an activity for an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon to take my mind off the pain and stimulate my brain. My favorite stay at home activities included:
You can create art or appreciate art. Either way is fun and stimulating! I love to draw all kinds of things—animals, Zentangles, and landscapes.
When in the mood to appreciate art, I look to online museums:
- Meditation and mindfulness: I did a body scan meditation. If you are new to meditation, you can use an app to start a guided meditation practice.
Do exercises that your doctor or physical therapist have approved to stimulate circulation and gently warm up and stretch your muscles. Gentle hatha yoga, tai chi, qi gon, or yin yang yoga might be a helpful activity. Check out Wii games, which can give you feedback or you can play against others who are online.

These days video games can be played against a computer or against other subscribers. You are not alone.
- Learning and experiencing new things
- Shopping online
If you are able to shop online, it can be a real convenience.
- Online support group
Sign up for a moderated online support group with people who have the same medical diagnosis or abilities as you. They can really understand and listen, and you can also help others by listening and encouraging them. They might also have tips on activities that might be easy for you to start.
- Listen to or play music
- Watch quality television and educational programs
- Observe nature: You can watch the birds in the garden or other wildlife that comes near your window.
- Practice a skill or hobby: whittling, glass cutting, soldering, knitting, crochet, embroidery, paper craft, and flower arranging are all great pastimes. They require few materials, and it’s easy to find an online tutorial. This is where I focused more of my activity time. I rediscovered crochet and cross stitch.
- Play a competitive game, such as cards or chess, online or with others at home with you. I played tug of war with my dog, Higgs.
- Reminisce: Look at pictures or recordings of loved ones and try to remember the details of the trip or stories about the fun, happy, or even sad times. Reminiscing is a natural process, and we all do it. It can be a way to review your life, recast it (glorify or see things differently), repair a broken relationship or reconnect with someone, and maybe find meaning in some of the things we experienced that were particularly challenging.
