Dubai - Abu Dhabi | Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Heritage Village

Today, an excursion to Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates. As one the world’s largest mosques, it can accommodate an astonishing 40,000 worshippers. It features 82 domes, over 1,000 columns, 24 carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the world’s largest crystal chandeliers –10 meters in diameter, 15 meters in height and weighing 12 tons. The mosque's first ceremony was the funeral of its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, who is buried at the site.

Heritage Village is a reconstruction of a traditional oasis village and provides an interesting glimpse into the emirate’s past. Traditional aspects of the desert way of life, including a campfire with coffee pots, a goats’ hair tent and a falaj irrigation system are attractively displayed in the open museum.

There are workshops where craftsmen demonstrate traditional skills such as metal work and pottery, while women sit weaving and spinning. The craftsmen are happy to share their skills and may occasionally give you the chance to try it yourself.

The little spice shops are a treat with a range of dried herbs, handmade soap and plenty of chatter!

Abu Dhabi | Yas Island

Today we visit Yas Island, an entertainment destination within a 30 minute drive of the capital city Abu Dhabi. Yas Island is home to the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit – host to the annual Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Jebel Hafeet - The second tallest mountain in the United Arab Emirates. Today we venture to Jabal Ḥafeet near the border with Oman.  As we get closer to the Meyzad border crossing, we visit a camel market.

Al Ain is an inland oasis city on the eastern border with Oman. It’s known as the Garden City for its palm groves and natural springs. Bronze Age remains include tombs on the towering Jebel Hafeet, a mountain to the south, and in Al Hili Archaeological Park to the north. The central Al Ain National Museum, next to the Eastern Fort, displays artifacts from these sites.
