Muscat (MCT)

Upon arrival into Muscat, you'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Relax and enjoy the hotel for the remainder of the day or explore this bustling capital city on your own.

Muscat | Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Muttrah Souq (Bazaar), Al Alam Palace, Al Jalali, Al Mirani

Experience the influence of Persians, Portuguese and Ottomans on Muscat.

Today we visit the 5th largest mosque in the world, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque replete with Swarovski chandeliers and a one piece carpet covering the whole mens’ prayer hall.

Passing by the diplomatic quarter, let’s go to the oldest and largest market in the country, Muttrah Souq (Bazaar). This is a time to shop for your Omani souvenirs. Walk through its narrow alleys where the air is filled with the aroma of frankincense and sandalwood. Don’t forget to bargain!

Next stop is the Al Alam Palace where the Sultan receives his official guests. The palace is flanked by two Portuguese fortresses, Al Jalali (1578) to the right and Al Mirani (1581) to the left. At the museum, you will witness traditional artifacts and traces of the history and pre-history of Muscat.

Muscat - Sur | Leisurely Hike through Wadi Shab, Bimmah Sinkhole

Today is all about turquoise pools, waterfalls and terraced plantations in Wadi Shab – a gorge between cliffs, carved out by seasonal floodwaters.

What separates Oman from other Gulf States is its diverse geography and nature. We start the day with a leisurely hike through Wadi Shab. You and your guide will determine the most suitable itinerary for the day. There is a possibility of swimming along the way so prepare a change of clothes! You will pass by Bimmah Sinkhole with its azure saltwater pool. Arriving at the fishing town of Sur, home of traditional Dhows (boats), you will visit the dhow factory in an open-air museum.

Sur - Wahiba Desert | Wadi Bani Khalid, Desert Camp

Our Sand & Stone day!

We embark on a stunning coastal drive this morning to Wadi Bani Khalid where water flows all year round. This most loved wadi (gorge between cliffs) of the country featuring large pools of turquoise and emerald colored water, lined with lush green palm trees inviting you to jump in to refresh. And for the main destination of the day, you traverse the elevations of the vast Wahiba desert. Then stay at an authentic desert camp, with local cuisine and cultural performance. This is a unique experience everyone will enjoy.

Wahiba Desert - Nizwa | Ibra Old Town, Jabreen Castle, Bahla Fort

We head towards the nearby town of Ibra with its remarkable Old Town and women’s market. On your way to Nizwa visit the most beautiful castle in Oman, Jabreen Castle. At the last stop visit another UNESCO site, the historic Bahla Fort at the foot of the Omani highlands. We continue to Nizwa for the night.

Nizwa | Nizwa Fort. Jebel Shams, Al Hamra Village, Bait Al Safa Museum

Explore the cultural capital of the country, Nizwa. This is followed by a visit to the most popular national monument, Nizwa Fort. Next, visit Jebel Shams, the mountain of the sun (Grand Canyon of Oman). Al Hamra is a traditional Omani village. It is famous for its rich heritage and you can also visit Bait Al Safa Museum, a traditional house where you get an insight to the daily life of the rural Omanis.

Enjoy a nice rest with typical Omani coffee and dates before heading back to Nizwa!

Nizwa - Muscat | Livestock Market, Birkat Al Mauz

Nizwa is famous for traditional Omani handicraft such as silverware and jewelry, leather goods, pottery and woven palm tree leaf baskets!

As it is a Friday, farmers bring their cattle, goats and other animals to be auctioned at the weekly livestock market.  Watch the farmers and traders from as far as Salalah barter and trade at one of the finest traditional markets.  Another Instagram worthy moment!

Just as you thought you are done with shopping at Muttrah Souq (bazaar on day 2), you will be equally tempted by the bustling Nizwa Souq (bazaar) that is lined with handicrafts stalls and silversmiths working in their small shops.

Next, let’s us stroll through the deserted ruined village - Birkat Al Mauz at the foot of the Jebel Akhdar MountainBirkat Al Mauz was a village in the kingdom (sultanate), surrounded by lush banana and date plantations, home to a classic example of the ingenious falaj irrigation system (falaj) which sees ancient waterways channel water through the village. Birkat Al Mauz is also a UNESCO heritage site and is a magical place particularly during sunset.

A few hours later we will reach Muscat.
